The Heart of Justice: Breaking the Cycle of
Fear, Violence, Punishment, Retaliation

Our fall workshop will focus on the high cost (human and financial) of our current criminal justice system, and alternatives that could benefit everyone.

Why does the United States, with about 5% of the world's population, have 25% of the world's prisoners? Why are people of color and people in poverty vastly over-represented in jails and prisons and on death row? (Hint: It's not because they have higher crime rates than everyone else.) While many states have finally begun to reduce their prison populations, Pennsylvania continues to build new prisons and increase corrections spending while cutting budgets for public schools and other human services.

Our program will include an overview of our "Prison Industrial Complex", first-hand stories from people who have been abused by the system, and examples of alternatives to the current dysfunctional system of incarceration and punishment. (Note that Pennsylvania and Lehigh County have instituted some creative new programs in recent years, but overall the system is still broken.)

We will also look at new initiatives in Lehigh Valley schools and communities to teach non-violent conflict resolution that will ultimately help to alleviate violent confrontation.

The workshop will also provide resources for engagement in restorative ministries and extending the conversation to church and community groups.

Look for more program updates here during October.
