Protest at DA’s Office Demands Action for Children Sentenced to Die in Prison
WHAT: “Have a Heart, Seth Williams” Rally to end Juvenile Life Without Parole
WHEN: Tuesday, August 9th, 12 noon
WHERE: Three South Penn Square (southeast of Philadelphia City Hall)
WHO: The Coalition to Abolish Death By Incarceration (CADBI).
Speakers include family of people serving Juvenile Life Without parole (JLWOP) sentences, people who have lost loved ones to violence, attorneys representing people serving JLWOP, and members of CADBI.
WHY: Two U.S. Supreme Court decisions have clarified that mandatory Life Without Parole sentences (also known as “Death by Incarceration”) for juveniles are unconstitutional. Yet District Attorney Seth Williams is fighting to keep people sentenced to die in prison as children behind bars for most or all of their adult lives. CADBI and supporters will converge at the District Attorney’s office to demand that Williams “Have a Heart” and follow the lead of other Pennsylvania counties, which have already brought prisoners serving juvenile life home. Philadelphia has 300+ juvenile lifers, more than any other county in the nation or the world.
VISUALS: Large signs highlighting the difference between the DA’s words and his actions. Giant paper mache “Have a Heart Award,” which will be delivered to Seth Williams.
