On May 25th - June 3rd, Decarcerate PA marched 113 miles from Philadelphia to Harrisburg to demand a people's budget, not a prison budget.
Now we need your help to move the campaign forward.
On June 26th, we are calling on people across the state to call your legislators and demand that they vote NO on any budget with increased funding for the Department of Corrections while the DOC continues to build unnecessary new prisons.
"I support the demand of Decarcerate PA's march for a people's budget to create a humane budget that prioritizes human need-- social services, school funding, healthcare, and jobs-creation-- over the destructive system of mass incarceration in PA. PA is expanding prisons at a time we should be looking for new and better ways to deal with problems of public safety and inequality in society. The system of mass incarceration in the U.S.
I am a youth. I am a young African American lady with goals. I am surrounded by my community that is being destroyed by the governor, state legislators and more people who don’t care.
I am with a team that supports the things I’m fighting for called Decarcerate PA and the Youth Art Self & Empowerment Project (YASP). I am marching from Philadelphia to Harrisburg because it’s time to stand up and fight, end prison expansion and to help the next generation that NEEDS they education.
Today was our day of rest and outreach in Reading. We woke up and had breakfast with the wonderful Unitarians who put us up in their homes.
Then we headed in to Reading to hand out flyers, read statements and letters from people inside of Pennsylvania's prisons, and make more flags for our “Instead of Prisons... PA People's Budget” project.
We started out our morning early in Collegeville. We had an exciting moment early in the morning when we took a quick detour over an abandoned bridge to avoid a busy intersection. Here's us stopping by an abandoned bulldozer for a photo op.
We've had an incredible first two days on the March for a People's Budget - Stop Prison Expansion Now!
We kicked off our 100 mile march to Harrisburg with a mass rally in Love Park and a march to the Art Museum. Thanks so much to all the amazing speakers and organizations who spoke at the rally and marched the first mile with us! Check out two amazing videos of the kick off rally below:
